Schlachtensee Lake, Berlin

Monday, September 09, 2013

After a relaxing morning walking around Winterfeldplatz Markt, we decided the day didn't need to get any more taxing and jumped on the S-Bahn. Direction? To the lakes!

Yep, within 45 minutes you can find yourself beside the beautiful Schlachtensee, a huge natural lake perfect for bathing and relaxing on a hot summers day. Walk 15 minutes from the Schlachtensee S-Bahn stop along the waters edge and you'll come to a vast green bank filled with families and groups lounging out on the soft grass by the shore.

The water is clean and relatively clear and perfectly safe for swimming. More sensible crowds had brought along lake based paraphernalia but sadly Ryanair rejected my paddleboard at the flight gate. Unfazed, I jumped in, visually transporting myself back to the glorious waters of the beautiful blue Mediterranean sea.

The lake is hugely popular all throughout summer and until the last few drops of sunshine fall on Berlin in early September. If you happen to be here in September, stay late to watch the sunset, when the sun goes down early over the lake, bathing it in a beautiful golden light.
