Kauf Dich Glücklich Waffle House, Berlin

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

One of the many advantages of doing this program is having to do almost no research for yourself on the best places to go in Berlin. Ask the project leaders for the best chocolate, the best beer, the best sights and they can reel off a list of recommendations. The only trouble is narrowing it down.

When waffles were mentioned, however, there was only one place to go: Kauf Dich Glücklich (Buy Yourself Happy) on Oderburger Strasse.

We tried, briefly, to sit outside because the weather is still quite mild in Berlin but the city is currently over run by wasps and bees which make eating outside akin to an extreme sport. Luckily the inside is just as charming as the outside and covered with cosy cushions and potted flowers.

I went up to the counter and confidently ordered a "ein Karamell Waffle, bitte un ein Tee mit Milsch...bitte" and squinted my eyes, waiting for the man to respond in English. Didn't happen! Even though he had to go through every colour of tea available on the planet before I twigged what the hell he was asking me and responded uncertainly..."schwarz?". Bingo! That's what he wanted to hear. It hasn't been a wasted month.

My Karamell waffle lived up to the hype, gooey, cakey and enough caramel to drown Berlin's entire wasp population.

If you're looking for something a little bit more German, go for the fresh cherries and cream instead...

Perfect end to a lovely weekend with my friends (and most loyal readers). Afterwards we headed over to the Mauerpark flea market for a browse before they caught their flight home. Sad to see them leave, but that will be me flying out tomorrow so I know it won't be long until we're reunited again.
